A Spring Message from Tanglewood Vice-Chair Susan Price

As Tanglewood returns for a more normal summer, Tanglewood Vice-Chair Susan Price explains what is returning and what still will be a bit different.

The Tanglewood 2022 summer season will soon be upon us, and it looks significantly closer to the pre-pandemic Tanglewood summer season of 2019. We have a full slate of concerts starting June 17 that will continue through September 4. The season will feature performances by Popular Artists, the Boston Pops, the Tanglewood Music Center, the BU Tanglewood Institute, classes at the TLI, and the BSO, led by Andris Nelsons and many guest conductors, over seven weeks at the Tanglewood campus. The success of BSO NOW continues as a worldwide streaming option.

In the December 2021 issue of Quarter Notes, I addressed some of the temporary changes instituted last summer to conform to COVID-19 guidelines at that time. Some of these changes have become a permanent part of the Tanglewood operating structure, while others have not. Because of the continuing focus on COVID-19 guidelines, a few projects have been temporarily deferred until future years. These changes are as follows:

Project Highlights

Hosts and Greeters are now combined into the Host project as their functions are similar and somewhat overlap. Merchandise will now move back to the Main Gate and Highwood Gift Shops. Other active projects are Tour Guides, Ushers, Brochure Distribution, and Information Table.

Temporarily deferred or inactive projects include Exhibit Docents at the Tappan House, Tanglewood for Families, Family Fun Fest, TMC Lunch Program, and Seranak Flowers. The Welcome Center is no longer a project and will be staffed by the BSO.

A new project, Mobile Ticketing Assistance, has been added to the volunteer project list. Volunteers will be trained to assist visitors in the use of mobile ticketing. It is anticipated that this will significantly speed up the Tanglewood gate entry process.

Coffee Talks are scheduled for two mornings each in July (1 and 9) and August (5 and 13). Come and meet and greet new and current volunteers, followed by a tour of the campus. Signups for existing volunteers are available on the BSAV portal.

Volunteers Highlights

  • The Welcome Back Reception is scheduled for June 15 at 3pm and will include the presentation of the 2021 Carrie L. Peace Award.
  • All training will be done via Zoom, then recordings posted to YouTube, allowing volunteers to review training material for their project multiple times, as needed. Ushers will also have an in-person, self-led training to accompany the virtual training.
  • The Volunteer Recognition Event is scheduled for August 18 at 2pm.
  • We will be welcoming many new volunteers to Tanglewood this season.
  • Volunteer and companion badges will once again serve as lawn passes to BSO concerts, not to Popular Artist concerts.
