Office Notes - Winter 2023

Hear from Erin Asbury, Director of Volunteer Services, on everything that has happened since last issue.

Greetings BSAV Members!

Can you believe it is already February?! And yes, we are already in full planning mode for Tanglewood. With that said:

Tanglewood Scheduling
We hope to start this process for projects ASAP. Stay tuned, as each project will get 2 emails prior to the start of scheduling: one letting you know of the date/time scheduling will go live for your project, and another reminder the day that scheduling will go live.

While you have mostly read about what has happened, I wanted to highlight things to come and to put on your calendars for the coming months:

Date TBD – Zoom Happy Hour
(interview with BSO musician /learn about an orchestral instrument)

Tuesday, March 7, 6pm – Music 101
with again, yours truly, Rabb Room at Symphony Hall, focusing on more complex rhythm, 7pm drinks at Westland (cash bar)

Sunday, August 6: Tanglewood BSAV Named Concert and Bus Trip
(more details to come!)

Dates TBD: Boston Recognition Event, Tanglewood Welcome Back and Recognition Events.
I will send invites as well as post these to the portal as soon as I know them so you can hold the time on your calendar!

Factoids

Fun facts about the Boston Symphony’s history to keep you in the know!

  • Seiji Ozawa Hall, designed by the architectural firm Rawn and Associates of Boston, was built in 1994 on the Tanglewood property. William Rawn commissioned acoustician R Lawrence Kirkegaard to consult on the project. Prior to construction, they toured eleven of Europe’s concert halls known for their acoustical excellence. Ozawa Hall’s Loge and balconies are modeled on what they learned.
  • Ozawa Hall is built in a shoebox shape which helps provide acoustical warmth. A state-of-the art amplification system helps carry the sound to the patrons on the lawn, when the barn-style door in the back of the Hall is opened.
  • Tanglewood Learning Center consists of four sustainable buildings, which were designed to be climate-controlled for year-round use by the Berkshire community. In keeping with the BSO’s focus on acoustics, the buildings are shaped and built with materials for the best possible sound, high-end HVAC systems, sound and vibration isolation treatments, wood and curtain wall façade, and intricate millwork.

Thank you for all you do for us!!

Best,

Erin Asbury
