Quarter Notes

Office Notes - October 2023

Hear from Erin about what the volunteers have in store as the BSO season kicks off once again at Symphony Hall.

Greetings BSAV Members!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for a fabulous summer, and also for a great kick-off to the 2023-24 BSO season!

This summer at Tanglewood, we exceeded our sales goals, late summer had a nine-city, twelve-concert European tour, and following this, Chad T. Smith joined the BSO as our new CEO. We do not have a shortage of bright spots these days, and I look forward to many more to come.

While you have mostly read about what has happened, I wanted to highlight things to come and to put on your calendars for the coming months:

Monday, November 6, 6pmMusic 101 with yours truly in Rabb Room. Rhythm Review, introduction to pitch. Yes – we will all be ‘singing’. In my terms, that is essentially vocalizing pitch, so no fabulous singing voice needed!

Wednesday, January 24, 6pm – Music 101 with again, yours truly, in the Rabb Room. Pitch and intro to harmony. And yes, we will be singing in harmony.

Sunday, February 18, 2024, 2pm – BSAV Named Concert: 1pm Reception in Cabot-Cahners, 2pm concert

October 16-22 was National Estate Planning Awareness Week! Did you know that planned gifts of any amount made to the BSO, Tanglewood or Boston Pops in your will, trust, or as a beneficiary of your retirement plan will make a lasting impact? Visit bso.org/plannedgiving to learn more!

A special thank you to Brenna, our BSAV summer intern at Tanglewood!

Factoids

Fun facts about the Boston Symphony’s history to keep you in the know.

How a Saint may have been born on the Tanglewood Grounds

One of my personal favorites, and lesser-known stories about Tanglewood, is the story of Rose Hawthorne, later known in life as Mother Mary Alphansa. Rose is indeed the daughter of American writer Nathaniel Hawthorne, and was born in the little red cottage on Hawthorne Road near the Lion’s Gate that we currently use as study and workspace for composers.

Rose was raised in a home that did not practice any religion in particular, although her father, Nathaniel Hawthorne, did frequently include religious undertones in his work and is associated with Transcendentalism. After a failed marriage, Rose converted to Catholicism. Not only did she convert, but she became a nun. Not only did she become a nun, but she founded a religious order, which is still active and known as the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne, who serve terminally ill cancer patients.

Rose passed away in 1926, and in 2003 she was declared a “Servant of God”, which is the first step towards canonization (aka becoming an official Saint in the Catholic Church). In 2013, a “Decree of Validity” from the Vatican confirmed she is in consideration for sainthood.

Her Wikipedia article is HERE, and an interesting video of her history is HERE told by a current member of the order she founded. Disclaimer – the end is a little religious, but more explanatory as to why she did the work she did.

Thank You All, and Happy Volunteering!
