Factoids

Fun facts about the Boston Symphony’s history to keep you in the know!

When Serge Koussevitzky came to the United States in 1924 to conduct the Boston Symphony, he was surprised to learn that none of the musicians in the orchestra had received any training on their instruments at music schools or conservatories in this country.

Koussevitzky had always been interested in establishing an academy for advanced musical training for extremely gifted young musicians. He hoped to open such a school when he lived in Moscow, Paris, and Boston. However, it wasn’t until 1940, when Tanglewood and the Tanglewood Music Center opened, that his dream became a reality.

The Tanglewood Music Center (TMC) at Tanglewood is considered the world’s foremost training ground for classical musicians. The TMC offers intensive musical training and performance opportunities for emerging professional instrumentalists, singers, conductors, and composers, who are all taught by a faculty consisting of the finest musicians available. For the first few years, the Maestro himself instructed select conducting students, and Aaron Copland was the head of the composition department, a position he held for 25 years. Although jazz and pop are not included in the classical-focused curriculum, many of those who attend had and have successful careers in these musical genres in addition to classical music.
