Meet the New Boston Volunteers This Fall

Get to know the nine new volunteers you will see around Symphony Hall in the fall with Cassandra Gordon.

When the BSO returns for its fall season in September, nine new volunteers will help welcome them back to Symphony Hall. They are from diverse backgrounds and have very interesting “day jobs”; the common denominator is their love of music and the BSO...and the majority are trained musicians as well.

Sydney Neugebauer has been playing the bassoon since she was 11 years old. She works in the Earth Sciences department at Boston University in remote satellite testing. As a college student, she took full advantage of the BSO’s College Card program where student IDs and $10 got her into free concerts. She will be a host and help other volunteers welcome audiences to Symphony Hall.

James Hyun, born in Korea, attended Vanderbilt University, where he studied the percussion instruments. Although he no longer performs, he still has kept a finger in the arts at the Greater Boston Arts and Business Council in artistic programming, and his ultimate goal is to attend law school. He cites becoming a BSAV member as getting him back into the music world. He will also volunteer as a Symphony Hall host.

Naomi He is an international graduate student at Boston University originally from the middle area of China. She has played the erhu, a two string Chinese instrument, since she was 8. She loves literature, especially Japanese literature and American Transcendental works, and classical music composers like Claude Debussy and Beethoven. Her “day job” is very demanding, but she leaves some time to explore other interests, like meditation and quality talk!

New volunteer Jonathan Rosenthal.

John Rosenthal is the Music Supervisor for K-12 in the Marlborough Public School system, and is a trumpeter and a conductor. He still recalls the thrill of hearing Ozawa conduct Mahler’s Symphony No. 5 while in college. His interests in the BSAV are to gain knowledge about the Hall and lead tours.

John Halperin is not a musician but has a son who plays the violin. He will be volunteering both at Symphony Hall and Tanglewood. John will be a host at Symphony Hall, and at Tanglewood gets to soak up the beauty and sounds by hosting there as well.

New volunteer Cathy Carter.

Cathy Carter comes to us with a different perspective. She works in Human Resources for a software company, but her two daughters play the clarinet and violin in their school music program. A Bostonian by birth, she raised her family in Lowell and is very interested in the rebirth of the Merrimack Valley. As an avid gardener, she will join the café flowers and hall décor committee.

Ashley Wang, Liyang Chan, and Alexandra Franco Garcia will also join the BSAV in the fall.

We are all looking forward to a full season in the fall and continue to support the BSO!
