Tamela & David Mann
About
David and Tamela Mann's story is one of resilience and triumph. Born in East Texas and raised in Fort Worth's Stop Six neighborhood, they overcame significant odds in their youth and early careers to inspire audiences globally through music, theater, television, comedy, literature, fashion, social media, and philanthropy. Their journey from humble beginnings to becoming celebrated entertainers is a powerful testament to their hard work, determination, talent, and faith.
David and Tamela began their illustrious careers as integral members of Kirk Franklin & The Family, where their powerful voices and dynamic performances helped shape the sound of 1990s gospel music. Whether it’s David’s soul-stirring vocal lead on "He’s Able" or the commanding vocal prowess of Tamela on "Now Behold the Lamb," their contributions to the group were instrumental in bringing gospel music to mainstream audiences, blending traditional sounds with contemporary influences. This early success laid the foundation for their evolution into iconic roles within the Tyler Perry franchise, most notably as Mr. Brown and Cora alongside Madea. These beloved characters not only showcased their comedic talents but also solidified their status as versatile performers, captivating audiences through music, theater, and on screen.
David and Tamela Mann have been central to the success of the Tyler Perry franchise, significantly contributing to stage plays, movies, and hit shows like "Meet the Browns," "Mann & Wife" (a family docuseries) and, currently, "Assisted Living," one of BET's top-rated shows. They’ve also built their own media and entertainment company, TillyMann Inc., where they provide opportunities for people of color both in front of and behind the camera. This venture has employed thousands in entertainment production, leading the way in idea innovation, technology, touring, and the creation of culturally relevant content.
David, a two-time NAACP Image Award-winning actor and comedian, is now venturing into directing, showcasing his keen eye for storytelling and his ability to bring out the best in his fellow performers. Despite his long list of successful projects, David still finds time to give back to his community through mental health education efforts in partnership with the Ad Council and Huntsman Mental Health Institute. His "Mann to Man, Love Your Mind" series on MannTV focuses on mental health awareness and support.
Tamela has been a transformative figure in the gospel industry, making history with her countless awards, including Grammy and American Music awards. Most recently, she became the first artist to score 10 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Gospel Radio Airplay chart. Tamela’s authenticity and passion shine through in every performance, touching hearts and inspiring millions. Beyond the stage, she has made a significant impact through her entrepreneurial endeavors in fashion with the Tamela Mann Collection. Her athleisure line empowers plus-size women globally and provides employment opportunities for people of color.
As a married couple of 36 years, David and Tamela have become a beacon of hope, joy, and inspiration, showcasing the beauty of marriage with Christ at the center of their lives. Their book and CD, "Us Against the World," highlight their commitment to inspiring love and marriage, and earned an NAACP Image Award. They’ve also pioneered the highly successful MannTV YouTube channel, where they’ve created multiple content series to deliver authentic, relevant and entertaining content for families worldwide. Through artistry and partnership, they prove that couples can work, play and stay together.
