About

Andrew Y. Kim, age 17, is excited and honored to solo with the Boston Symphony Orchestra as the Cornelius A. & Muriel P. Wood First Prize winner of the BSO Concerto Competition. Andrew began playing the cello at age six, quickly developing a passion for music. Andrew has won the top prize in international, national and regional competitions, including Grand Prize at the Fidelity Young Artists Competition leading to a solo performance with the Boston Pops at Boston Symphony Hall, First Prize of the American Protégé International Concerto Competition leading to a solo performance at Carnegie Hall, and Winner of the National YoungArts Foundation Competition in Classical Music. As First Prize winner or invited guest, Andrew has had solo engagements with the New England Philharmonic, Brockton Symphony, Lexington Symphony, Arlington Philharmonic, Metrowest Symphony, Sharon Chamber Orchestra, Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra, Rivers Conservatory Symphony, and Rivers Youth Orchestras.

Andrew enjoys playing in ensembles, serving as principal cellist of the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra. He has performed in international summer festivals at Orford Music Academy in Canada, and cello master classes in Fontfroide Abbey in France and Sant Lorenc de Morunys, Spain. Andrew has been invited to play in master classes with Steven Isserlis, Lluís Claret, Amit Peled, Nathan Cole, Owen Young, Natasha Brofsky, and Peter Stumpf.

Giving back to the community is important to Andrew. He enjoys using music for change, organizing fundraising concerts for important causes such as food insecurity, and serving as a volunteer musician at homeless shelters, hospitals and senior living communities. Outside of music, Andrew enjoys serving as a class officer in student government, playing tennis and basketball, and spending time with family and friends. Andrew, a senior at Weston High School, is a former student of Mr. Ronald Lowry at the Rivers School Conservatory, and currently studies with Professor Lluis Claret at the New England Conservatory.
