Boston Pops Returns to Symphony Hall for Dynamic 2022 Spring Season

The Boston Pops 2022 spring season is finally here, and it has been a long journey back to the stage. The last Spring Pops season came in 2019, and to mark the long-awaited return, the Pops will present a season packed with musical performances to celebrate in unforgettable style.

Foremost among the excitement is honoring the 90th birthday of George and Roberts Berry Boston Pops Conductor Laureate John Williams. The orchestra will mark the grand occasion appropriately, with a series of Film Nights, where the Pops will perform his unforgettable scores live to accompany the showings of films he has scored, including The Empire Strikes Back.

Fans of the stage and screen will be transported by The Magical Music of Alan Menken, celebrating the legendary composer’s extensive career, including music from The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Little Shop of Horrors, and more. Join Broadway stars Susan Egan, Telly Leung, and Alton Fitzgerald White as they perform audience favorites, as well as lesser-known songs from Menken’s career that will leave concertgoers enchanted by the magic. Fans of Broadway’s Hamilton will not want to miss An Evening with Christopher Jackson, when the Tony nominee joins the Boston Pops for a memorable evening of pop, show tunes, soul, and some of his own original music. The winners of the Fidelity Investments Young Artists Competition, a group of talented musicians from across Massachusetts, will make their exciting debuts during Jackson’s Tuesday evening performance.

Legendary jazz musician Duke Ellington is the subject of Duke Ellington Reimagined, a fascinating look into the musician’s career and legacy, as well as his decades-long creative collaboration with Billy Strayhorn. The program, featuring Lara Downes and Brian Stokes Mitchell, will explore how the pair’s works shaped the sound and spirit of American music, and will premiere the Strayhorn Concerto, built around three of the musician’s most expressive songs. This season, the Boston Pops’ annual Gospel Night will finally return to Symphony Hall with Grammy-winning vocalist Smokie Norful and the Boston Pops Gospel Choir. The evening is certain to uplift one’s soul and fill Symphony Hall with the fan-favorite celebration of joyous music again after so long.
