Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra and Conducting Fellows join forces with Finnish conductor Dima Slobodeniouk for four pieces that paint dynamic orchestral landscapes.
Julia Perry’s energetic and edgy Study for Orchestra leads off, with its dips into the cinematic. Perry was a mid-20th century African American composer whose work is an amalgamation of her Black American musical heritage with more traditional western European music traditions.
Bernstein’s Suite from On the Waterfront takes us solidly into film territory with music from one of the few movies Bernstein ever scored, bringing front and center his signature blend of Broadway, classical, and jazz music. The program closes with two pieces by Stravinsky that explore the way he evolved his approach to rhythm and theme.
