Music Director Andris Nelsons leads this all-American program including works by inaugural BSO Composer Chair Carlos Simon and recent music by Sarah Kirkland Snider, both of which explore social justice via a musical lens. Two mid-20th-century classics are also featured: BSO Principal Clarinet William R. Hudgins is soloist in Aaron Copland’s delightfully energetic Clarinet Concerto, contrasting with Samuel Barber’s soulful, evergreen Adagio for Strings.
The September 27 performance will include a pre-concert talk starting at 12:15pm with BSO Director of Program Publications Robert Kirzinger and the BSO Deborah and Philip Edmundson Composer Chair Carlos Simon.

Forward Into Light
Sarah Kirkland Snider’s colorful and energetic Forward Into Light includes a quote from Dame Ethel Smyth’s “March of the Women,” a suffragette anthem from the 1910s.
Clarinet Concerto
Aaron Copland wrote his Clarinet Concerto for the great jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman, who was a stalwart advocate for symphonic concert music.
Adagio for Strings
Samuel Barber’s poignant Adagio for Strings is one of the most recognizable, and moving, pieces in the orchestral repertoire.
WAKE UP! Concerto for Orchestra
BSO Composer Chair Carlos Simon wrote his dynamic and colorful WAKE UP! Concerto for Orchestra with inspiration from Nepali poet Rajendra Bhandari.
