The program begins with the American premiere of Sofia Gubaidulina’s musically and spiritually forceful Wrath of God, a 2019 work dedicated to Beethoven that Andris Nelsons recorded with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig. BSO principal trumpet Thomas Rolfs is the soloist in Detlev Glanert’s Trumpet Concerto, an eclectic, dramatic work commissioned for and premiered by Rolfs in 2019. The program concludes with Sergei Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 4, commissioned by longtime BSO music director Serge Koussevitzky for the orchestra’s 50th anniversary in 1931.

The Wrath of God
Sofia Gubaidulina's powerful Wrath of God was premiered by the Vienna Radio Symphony in June 2020 and is dedicated “to the great Beethoven,” whose 250th birth anniversary was celebrated that year.
Trumpet Concerto
German composer Detlev Glanert wrote his 2019 Trumpet Concerto for BSO Principal Trumpet Thomas Rolfs.
Symphony No. 4, Opus 47 (original version)
Legendary BSO Music Director Serge Koussevitzky led the premiere of Prokofiev’s Fourth at Symphony Hall in November 1930. More than a decade later, Prokofiev returned to the symphony, creating virtually a new piece (designated Opus 112).
