2021-2022 Annual Report
Connecting Our Community
Symphony Hall Welcomes All
Symphony Hall is an indelible part of Boston’s civic identity—a place where every member of our community can feel welcome. The reopening of the people’s concert hall this year was a joyous reunion for concertgoers, musicians, staff, and volunteers. In preparation for the event, Andris Nelsons said, “Being able to spend time together, filling our hearts and minds and embracing all of music’s spiritual gifts that await us inside Symphony Hall—this will be a very special time for all of us.”

A Legacy of Volunteerism
Members of the BSO community are more than concertgoers; the Boston Symphony Orchestra Association of Volunteers (BSAV) is an integral part of every event at Symphony Hall and Tanglewood. These dedicated members of the BSO family lead tours, assist patrons in our shops, and help children discover the wonders of classical music at youth concerts and in the Instrument Playground. During this season’s return to in-person events, a record-setting 61 new volunteers joined our ranks, bringing the total number of volunteers to 478 for the 2022 season.
Youth and Family Concerts
We continued our beloved tradition of presenting lively youth and family concerts under the direction of Thomas Wilkins, Germeshausen Youth and Family Concerts Conductor. Designed especially for children to help build connections to the orchestra and orchestral music, the program featured 2022 BSO Concerto Competition winner and Walnut Hill School for the Arts student Jinyoung Kweon performing Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2.

Building Connections in the Berkshires
Our commitment to our summer home in the Berkshires extends beyond the grounds of Tanglewood. In 2022, we presented our fourth annual Tanglewood in the City to audiences of all ages on the Pittsfield Common. This community-centered event featured live performances from two local bands followed by a screening of a recorded BSO Tanglewood concert. The repertoire from that evening featured the Orchestra with special guests Nicole Cabell, and Aaron Diehl. Additionally, we are proud to contribute to the Berkshires' cultural life and economic development as a member of the Berkshire Cultural Asset Network (BCAN).
