About the Music

American composer Peter Lieberson composed his Neruda Songs, co-commissioned by the BSO, for his wife, the mezzo-soprano Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, who sang the cycle with the orchestra in December 2005. Peter Lieberson’s moving Songs of Love and Sorrow are a response to her death from cancer in July 2006. Commissioned by the BSO, Farewell Songs are settings of Neruda texts sung from a male perspective. Debussy’s kaleidoscopic 1913 ballet score Jeux, written for the Ballets Russes, begins the program, which concludes with Schubert’s majestic Symphony in C, a cornerstone of the early Romantic era in music.
