About the Music
Berg wrote his incredibly moving Violin Concerto as a memorial to Manon Gropius, the 18-year-old daughter of Mahler’s widow Alma Mahler and the architectWalter Gropius. The soloist in Berg’s concerto is the German violinist Christian Tetzlaff. Like Berg’s concerto, Mahler’s Ninth Symphony was its composer’s final work, a stunningly moving piece that has been interpreted as a meditation on death and one of the most beautiful symphonies in the literature.
