EdgeFest Continues with Hem - June 26 and 27
Hem
The seven-year-old Hem recently released its third studio album Funnel Cloud. The richly orchestrated cd is the group's most pop-oriented effort, while remaining true to its indie band roots. Vocalist Sally Ellyson, pianist Dan Messé, guitarists Gary Maurer and Steve Curtis - hail from Brooklyn, New York. However, their music conjures up vivid, pastoral settings and restless, the lonesome characters of wide-open prairies far, far away. Since its inception, Hem hasn't employed any technological shortcuts to achieve its sound. Co-founder Dan Messé was so committed to a made-by-human-hands approach that he began selling off his possessions to finance the recording of Rabbit Songs, the band's 2001 debut. Messé's act of faith did not go unrewarded; the reviews of Rabbit Songs were nothing short of rapturous. Rolling Stone called it a "a passionate and beautiful folk-pop record"; Time Out London described it as "fragile pastoral Americana...it is rare, rich, sad and innocent, yet warm to the touch and wet with desire." The Associated Press simply declared it "an exquisite album." After Rabbit Songs was featured on NPR's All Things Considered, Hem steadily built a passionate national following. These programs also include a world premiere performance, commissioned by the Boston Pops, of Felix Brenner's "Travelacoustica: Symphonic Remix," featuring world renown DJ Paul Oakenfold and drummer extraordinaire Andreas Brobjer.
NEMO Music Festival
After the concerts, the Boston Pops’ EdgeFest will also feature emerging talent performing at the Edge Café, produced by OurStage.com in partnership with the NEMO Music Festival. On June 26 and 27, the Edge Café features Mieka Pauly, a singer who blends soul, blues, and rock into her signature sound, and Chad Perrone, a critically acclaimed musician who weaves deep lyric hooks with graceful melodies. The programming reflects OurStage and NEMO's collective objective to provide meaningful opportunities for independent artists. OurStage.com is the only online democratic competition where the fans decide who is the best in emerging music and film. OurStage's goal is to help artists grow their authentic fan base while advancing their careers. To support this mission, the organization has partnered with industry tastemakers such as Paste magazine and NEMO Music Festival. To learn more about this new entertainment revolution, visit www.ourstage.com/paste. The NEMO Music Festival is dedicated to identifying and supporting emerging artists. For more information, visit www.nemoboston.com. All ticket holders are welcome to enjoy these up-and-coming New England groups that begin their performances at 10:15 p.m. in Symphony Hall's Hatch and Cabot-Cahners rooms.
