William R. Hudgins
Principal Clarinet, Boston Symphony Orchestra Ann S. M. Banks chair, endowed in perpetuity in 1977
William R. Hudgins became principal clarinet of the Boston Symphony Orchestra in the fall 1994, having joined the orchestra two years earlier. He has been heard as a soloist with the Boston Symphony on numerous occasions, including performances of Mozart’s and Copland’s clarinet concertos and Frank Martin’s Concerto for Seven Winds, Timpani, Percussion, and String Orchestra. As a member of the Boston Symphony Chamber Players, he can be heard on the Grammy-nominated recording of Hindemith’s Quartet for Clarinet, Violin, Cello, and Piano.

Michael Wayne
Clarinet, Boston Symphony Orchestra Thomas Stemberg chair
Clarinetist Michael Wayne joined the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s clarinet section in September 2008. He has enjoyed success as an orchestral, chamber, and solo musician performing throughout North and South America, Europe, and Asia. After finishing his studies at the University of Michigan in 2003, Mr. Wayne became a member of the Kansas City Symphony. In addition to his duties in Kansas City, he was also a member of the Grand Teton Festival Orchestra. Mr. Wayne has performed with the New World Symphony, Colorado Music Festival, Phoenix Symphony, and Kansas City Chamber Orchestra. In 2005 he gave the world premiere of Michael Daugherty’s Clarinet Concerto, Brooklyn Bridge, at Carnegie Hall in New York City, and subsequently recorded it for Equilibrium Records.

Thomas Martin

Thomas Martin served as principal clarinet of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra before joining the Boston Symphony in the fall of 1984. Born in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Mr. Martin graduated from the Eastman School of Music, where he was a student of Stanley Hasty and Peter Hadcock. He participated in master classes with Guy Deplus of the Paris Conservatory. Mr. Martin performs frequently as a recitalist and chamber musician and has been heard on “Morning Pro Musica” on WGBH radio.

Craig Nordstrom
Bass Clarinet, Boston Symphony Orchestra Farla and Harvey Chet Krentzman chair, fully funded in perpetuity
Born in Denver, Colorado, Craig Nordstrom joined the Boston Symphony Orchestra as bass clarinet in 1979. Mr. Nordstrom is a graduate of Northwestern University, where he was a student of Jerome Stowell, Donald Ambler, and Anthony Gigliotti. During his years at Northwestern, he was a member of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and the Colorado Philharmonic. Following graduation, he was a member of the United States Marine Band in Washington, D.C. While in Washington, Mr. Nordstrom earned his master’s degree from The Catholic University of America.
